This grand monument in Hamburg, Germany, once stood as a symbol of the city's power and its Hanseatic legacy, with the allegorical Hansa figure at its peak and Hamburgia seated below. Commissioned in the 19th century, it was clearly designed to impress with historical gravitas and to communicate something important about civic pride, though exactly what message got through to passers-by was probably a mixed bag even then.
In the 1970s, people found new, less symbolic uses for such impressive stone structures. A couple sits comfortably on the lower steps, treating centuries of allegorical statuary less as a call to remember and more as a convenient, slightly sun-dappled bench. The dedication of the original artists to their craft somehow translated into a nice spot for a picnic or a quiet conversation.
The man leaning against a lamppost nearby seems to be observing the scene, perhaps contemplating the evolution of public space. He might be wondering if the founders of the monument would have approved of its new function as urban furniture, or if they would have preferred people stand at attention. History, it seems, has a way of being repurposed.
The historian's note
The Hansabrunnen (Hansa Fountain/Monument) is located at Sievekingplatz in Hamburg, Germany. Completed in 1878, it was designed by Carl Börner and sculpted by Engelbert Peiffer. The monument commemorates the city's role in the Hanseatic League and its prosperity.
The central figures are allegorical: Hansa, representing the Hanseatic League, stands atop the monument, while Hamburgia, the personification of Hamburg, is seated below. The monument features various reliefs depicting Hamburg's history and trade, along with the coats of arms of the German Empire (Imperial Eagle) and the city of Hamburg.
This photograph, taken in the 1970s, captures the monument in a period when such historical structures served as integral parts of urban public spaces, often used casually by citizens for recreation and gathering, contrasting with their original solemn commemorative purpose.
