Someone in the 1960s pulled the car over for this one, because a mountain that looks like it has been raked by a giant comb is the kind of thing a person feels obligated to document. The vertical grooves running down the face are the rock doing exactly what erosion does to granite or volcanic stone left alone for several million years, though the person with the camera almost certainly just thought it looked dramatic against the sky.
There is no fence, no marker, no gift shop, which places this well outside the reach of the National Park Service's postcard machine. That was the appeal of Southwest road trips in this era: you found your own monuments, and nobody had gotten around to naming them for you yet.
The scrubby foreground and bare slopes confirm the obvious, that nothing about this place was going to support a farm, a town, or a reason to stay. It exists purely as a thing to look at, which is the one job it still does better than most man-made landmarks from the same decade.
The historian's note
This formation is a steep-sided desert peak exhibiting pronounced vertical jointing, a pattern typical of granitic or volcanic rock exposed to long-term weathering in an arid climate. Such fluted or ribbed rock faces are characteristic of ranges found across the American Southwest and northern Mexico, including areas of the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts.
The absence of any built infrastructure, trail markers, or interpretive signage indicates the site was not, at the time of the photograph, part of a developed park or tourist attraction. Road-trip photography of remote desert scenery of this kind became increasingly common through the 1960s as improved highways and affordable automobile travel opened the interior Southwest to casual visitors.
No specific peak name or precise location can be established from the visual evidence alone.
