This man, carved from several tons of marble, apparently spent his life perfecting a single pose. Ancient sculptors were deeply committed to the idea that a hero should possess maximum muscle density, even if his primary activity involved leaning on a club draped with a lion skin. This was considered peak masculinity for several centuries.
He stares off into the middle distance, perhaps contemplating his next Herculean task, or more likely, nothing at all, given his current petrified state. Generations of museum visitors have looked up at him, often feeling simultaneously inspired and inadequate, a common side effect of viewing ancient Greek body ideals.
The sheer permanence of this art form meant that once a hero's image was decided upon, it was decided for good. This particular rendition has survived millennia, far outlasting any temporary fad diet or exercise routine.
The historian's note
The Farnese Hercules is a monumental ancient Roman marble statue depicting the hero Heracles (Hercules) after completing his twelve labours. It is a 3rd-century AD Roman copy by Glykon of an original Greek sculpture by Lysippos, created in the late 4th century BC.
Discovered in 1546 within the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, it quickly became a highly influential piece for Renaissance artists due to its imposing size and idealised heroic physique. It represents Hercules leaning on his club, which is draped with the Nemean Lion's skin, and holding the apples of the Hesperides behind his back (though not fully visible in this view).
This iconic work is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, where it continues to be a central attraction, representing the pinnacle of classical heroic sculpture.
