On the image
This ancient stone carving, painstakingly rendered, was once a clear message from a ruler to his subjects, or perhaps to the gods. Someone spent years on this, probably because their job depended on it and the ruler had very specific ideas about how divinity should be represented.
Every intricate line and ornament had a specific meaning, understood by everyone at the time. Now, we generally appreciate it as 'art,' which is our polite way of acknowledging that we no longer understand what any of it actually means, besides 'old' and 'important.'
It was designed to project authority and perhaps divinity, intended to last for millennia and impress future generations with its timeless power. It did last, mostly, and it still impresses, but for entirely different reasons involving anthropology degrees and the eventual purchase of gift shop replicas.
The historian's note
The image captures a detail of a Maya stone carving, likely a stela or architectural relief, photographed during the 1970s. These monumental works were central to Classic Maya civilisation (c. 250-900 CE) in Mesoamerica.
Maya stone carvings served both religious and political functions, often depicting rulers, deities, or historical events, accompanied by hieroglyphic texts. They were erected in prominent public spaces within cities like Tikal, Palenque, Copán, and Yaxchilán, communicating important dynastic information and cosmological beliefs to the populace.
Such artefacts are invaluable primary sources for archaeologists and historians, providing insights into Maya iconography, writing systems, political organisation, and ritual practices. Their study contributes significantly to our understanding of pre-Columbian American societies.
