On the image
A steam locomotive, by the 1970s a charmingly outdated form of propulsion, hauls its bright yellow passenger cars through a canyon. It billows a plume of dark smoke into the clear mountain air, a testament to the era's robust but environmentally indifferent approach to recreational transportation.
The river it follows, wide and muddy, winds through the landscape, a natural counterpoint to the linear progress of the train. It's the kind of picturesque journey people paid good money for, where the destination was less important than the novelty of getting there the old-fashioned way.
This perspective, high above the tracks, suggests that someone made a considerable effort to capture this specific view. This dedication highlights the growing fascination with preserving, or at least documenting, the industrial past as it transitioned into a form of living history for tourists.
The historian's note
This image captures a steam-powered train, likely part of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, travelling alongside the Animas River in the Colorado Rockies during the 1970s. The narrow-gauge line, originally built in the 1880s by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway, primarily served mining operations in the San Juan Mountains.
By the 1970s, the line had largely transitioned from freight to a tourist operation, carrying passengers between Durango and Silverton. Its route through rugged canyon scenery became a popular attraction, drawing visitors eager to experience historic rail travel.
The continued operation of steam locomotives in commercial service during this period was increasingly rare, making lines like the Durango & Silverton significant for their preservation of early railroad technology and their role in regional tourism development.
