Someone in this family had the poor timing to be born in December, a fact the household solved the same way households solved it for decades: one cake, wedged between the Christmas poinsettia and the good china, doing double duty as a birthday centrepiece it was never quite tall enough to be. The two red candles suggest a number worth counting rather than a number worth admitting, and the poinsettia towers over the whole arrangement like it resents having to share the table.
The boy in the blue cardigan has the open, delighted grin of someone who knows cake is imminent, whilst the woman beside him wears the tighter smile of someone who has just arranged a candlestick and a cake stand for the fourth relative in a row and would like this documented quickly. Behind them a china cabinet holds the good glassware that only comes out for exactly this kind of occasion, glimpsed but never actually used tonight.
Everything about the tablescape – the tiered dessert stand, the crystal candle holders, the careful blue ribbon on the greenery – belongs to a decade when a birthday photograph was still a small production, blocked and lit and posed before anyone was allowed to eat the cake.
