On the image

From a high altitude, a small single-engine aircraft diligently works a swathe of rolling hills in the 1970s. This was the era of maximum-efficiency thinking, where technology provided solutions to make nature bend to our will, often with little thought for the long-term consequences of such enthusiastic intervention.

The historian's note

The image captures an aerial application operation during the 1970s. This period saw the widespread adoption of specialised aircraft for agricultural purposes, such as crop dusting and pest control, as well as for fighting forest fires.

These operations were integral to the intensification of agricultural production, allowing for the rapid distribution of fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides over large areas. The efficiency offered by aerial spraying contributed significantly to increased yields and food security.

While environmental concerns regarding the broad application of chemicals began to emerge in the 1970s, large-scale aerial application remained a common practice throughout the decade, reflecting the prevailing belief in technological solutions to agricultural and environmental challenges.
