The suit is doing exactly what a suit was supposed to do in this decade, which is disappear into the wall of a rented function room and let the man wearing it look serious without any effort on his part. He has combed his hair with the kind of confidence that assumes it will stay that way, and it has, mostly. The white pocket square is a small act of optimism, since no one in this room is going to need to blow their nose formally.
She has done considerably more work and it shows. The red dress with the cinched waist and the small hair ornament represents hours of preparation aimed at a single evening, back when a good dance or banquet was an event you built toward, not something you photographed forty times and picked the best one from later. The white clutch purse held nothing more than a compact and cab fare, because that was still all a purse needed to hold.
Behind them a plain wall and an HVAC vent place this squarely in some banquet hall or hotel ballroom, the unglamorous architecture that hosted a decade's worth of glamorous nights. Everyone smiled at the camera the same way back then, with the specific brightness of people who knew this picture would be the only record anyone kept of the evening.
The historian's note
This is a colour snapshot from the 1960s, almost certainly taken at a formal social occasion such as a wedding reception, company dinner-dance, or civic banquet, settings that made up much of American middle-class social life in this period. The man's dark suit with narrow tie and the woman's sleeveless cocktail dress with fitted waistband are typical formalwear of the era for such an event.
The plain painted wall and ceiling vent indicate an institutional or hotel banquet space rather than a private home, consistent with rented halls commonly used for such gatherings in this decade. No identifying signage or architectural detail permits further location.
Such images, produced in large numbers by amateur photographers using colour slide film, now serve as primary visual evidence for everyday middle-class dress, grooming, and social custom of the period.
