A farmstead sits at the horizon of a Midwestern cornfield at mid-growth, the kind of scene that appeared in thousands of magazine articles about American agricultural abundance in the postwar years. The farm itself—a cluster of a red barn, white house, and utilitarian outbuildings—is small enough to manage with one family and a few hired hands, which was still normal in the 1950s, before machinery made isolation profitable and economies of scale made it obligatory. The corn at the camera position is roughly waist-high, suggesting midsummer, when the crop should be doing exactly this and every farmer with a radio knew it. The straight geometry of the rows and the uniformity of the stand speak to the arrival of hybrid seeds and chemical fertiliser, technologies that promised predictability and made farmers believers in the idea that nature was finally under control.
The historian's note
The Corn Belt—Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and neighbouring states—emerged as the heartland of American grain production after the mechanisation of the 1930s and 1940s. By the 1950s, hybrid corn varieties, developed at land-grant universities and distributed by seed companies, had become standard, yielding 50 per cent more grain per acre than open-pollinated varieties. Chemical nitrogen fertilisers, abundant as a byproduct of wartime munitions manufacture, were redirected to agriculture and became the invisible backbone of the postwar food surplus. Family farms of 160 to 320 acres remained the norm in this region; the farm visible here, with its modest set of structures, represents the typical owner-operator holding of the era. The apparent photograph dates to the height of this system, before the farm crisis of the 1980s and the consolidation of land ownership that followed.
