Someone in the exhibits department decided this ancient carved head needed mood lighting, and by the 1960s museums had fully embraced the idea that history sells better when it looks vaguely supernatural. The stone face, hollow-eyed and open-mouthed, sits on a plinth bathed entirely in red, the kind of theatrical wash that tells visitors nothing about the object's age or origin but everything about the era's taste for atmosphere over information.
A small typed label is visible at the base, the standard museum gesture towards scholarship, though at this distance and in this light no one was ever meant to actually read it. The carving itself has clearly survived centuries of weather and handling before ending up here, indoors, under a spotlight, doing the one thing it never did in its original context: performing for an audience.
The glass case's shadow falls across the wall behind it like a stage frame, because someone understood, correctly, that an artefact photographed like a horror-movie prop gets more attention than one photographed like a rock. It worked. It is still working now.
