Amsterdam's canal system in the 1960s ran on a simple economics: the water was free, the banks were crowded, and boats were cheaper than apartment rent. A row of modest motor launches and houseboats sits moored in reflective stillness, their blunt white hulls catching what light the Kodachrome slide could hold in that washed-blue hour. Behind them, the city's characteristic narrow brick façades rise in a dense wall, the kind of apartment building where families had lived for generations in spaces that felt permanent precisely because they were cramped and permanent. What the camera caught without meaning to was the moment when living on a boat had not yet become picturesque or romantic—it was still simply what you did when the housing shortage made the alternative impossible. The boats face the same direction, tethered in place, waiting for nothing in particular.
The historian's note
Amsterdam's postwar housing crisis persisted well into the 1960s, driving thousands of residents to live on houseboats and converted barges moored throughout the canal system. These vessels served as primary residences rather than leisure craft, occupying a legal grey area that city authorities tolerated as a practical necessity. The Grachtengordel and surrounding canals became a de facto floating residential district, with boats arranged in long rows along the wharves. By the 1970s, this population had become institutionalised, with boat dwellers organising for legal recognition and moorage rights. The practice reflected both Amsterdam's geographic constraints and postwar scarcity—the same economic pressures that had filled European cities with temporary housing were simply more visible here, floating on water.
