The historian's note
The image depicts two dromedary camels in a natural setting, characteristic of a tourist encounter during the 1970s. Whilst their primary historical role has been as beasts of burden and transport in arid regions, by this period, camel rides had become a popular tourist attraction in many parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and other suitable climates.
These engagements offered visitors a perceived authentic experience of local culture or a novel form of recreation, even if the actual experience was often brief and commercialised. The animals were typically managed with simple rope harnesses, indicating their domesticated status and role in commercial activities.
