Someone is on her knees adjusting the bride's shoe, and the bride is holding still with the patient stillness of a woman who has already decided that nothing about this day is going to go perfectly, so she might as well not waste energy on the shoe. The matching pale dresses on everyone in the room, down to the smallest girl watching from the doorway, were the 1960s solution to the problem of a wedding party looking coordinated without anyone having to say the word coordinated out loud.
The veil is doing a great deal of structural work, holding a small crown of flowers aloft the way engineering holds up a bridge nobody asked to be impressive. A narrow mirror on the wall catches the whole operation from an angle no one intended to photograph, which is generally how the most honest record of an event gets made.
The littlest girl in matching yellow stands apart, arms folded behind her back, watching the grown women fuss over shoes with the solemn attention of someone taking mental notes for her own future wedding, unaware that by the time she has one, half of this ritual will be considered optional.
