On the image

The camera operator attempted to capture a grand vista of mountains and forests, a common human endeavour when travelling through scenic areas. The resulting blur suggests a firm belief that a good photo opportunity waits for no vehicle, even if the vehicle is moving at speed.

Below the snow-dusted peaks, the landscape shows signs of considerable effort, with large, shaped mounds of earth or tailings amidst scattered trees. It appears someone once thought this was the ideal location for a particular industrial activity, oblivious to the fact that future generations might simply blur it out of polite view.

The whole scene, captured in this impressionistic style, perfectly illustrates the 1970s human condition: wanting to document everything, but often doing so with equipment and methods that guaranteed an artistic rather than documentary outcome. Sometimes, not getting a clear shot is its own statement.

The historian's note

This image depicts a mountainous landscape showing significant signs of industrial activity, likely mining or quarrying. Large, terraced mounds of excavated material and scattered patches of snow suggest an operation in an alpine or sub-alpine environment.

While the specific location remains unidentifiable due to motion blur, the visual evidence is consistent with resource extraction practices common in the 1970s. This period saw continued expansion of mining operations, often in areas with significant natural beauty, resulting in considerable landscape alteration.

The photograph, despite its technical imperfections, provides a generalised record of industrial land use and the environmental changes it brought to natural settings during that decade.
