Someone pulled the car over because the leaves had turned and the water looked like something worth spending a frame on. This was the whole ritual of the era's new colour slide film: drive until the foliage peaks, stop at the first turnout with a view, and trust that Kodachrome would do the rest. It usually did, which is why so many attics still hold a carousel of lakes that nobody can name.

The foreground is choked with the season's dying pondweed, the kind of untidy detail an amateur photographer would have cropped out if he'd noticed it through the viewfinder, but he was watching the far shore instead. The trees across the water are doing exactly what they're supposed to do in October, holding their colour for the two weeks a year that justifies owning a camera at all.

No road, no cabin, no people, just the confident assumption that a nice enough lake needs no further explanation. It didn't, for him. It does now.
