Someone stood at the top of this old paved way with a camera and waited for the light to do something dramatic, which it obligingly did. The stones underfoot are cut and fitted the way Greek and Roman builders did it, meaning this path has been walked on for roughly two thousand years longer than the person photographing it had been alive, a fact the average 1960s tourist absorbed for about four seconds before moving on to lunch.
The retaining walls on either side are dry-stacked rubble, patched and repatched by generations of local masons who were not thinking about tourism when they did it, only about keeping the hillside from sliding into the road. Cypress and pine now do the job the original planners never intended, softening what was once a working thoroughfare into something that photographs like a postcard. Nobody in antiquity built a processional way expecting it to end up scenic.
The overexposed haze at the top of the frame is not a special effect; it is simply what happens when a traveller points a camera straight into a Mediterranean midday sun because the shot is more interesting than the light metre. The result outlived the assumption that caused it, which is generally how ruins work.
