A group of young adults pauses in a carefully maintained garden, presenting themselves for the camera. Their clothing choices, a riot of stripes and bold colours, were considered peak fashion in the 1970s, making them feel effortlessly cool, or at least confidently prepared for a European tour. The serious faces suggest this was a moment of grave importance, perhaps documenting their very presence in a historical place.
Behind them, ancient architecture and carefully clipped hedges stand witness to centuries of human activity, much of it involving people standing around in uncomfortable shoes. The young woman in red and white striped pants probably thought she was making a significant cultural statement, or at least looking fashionable whilst doing it. They are engaged in the timeless tourist tradition of visiting a grand place, looking at it briefly, and then mostly looking at the camera.
Fifty years later, the gardens are still there, the architecture still impressive, but the bold sartorial choices of these travellers now serve primarily as a historical marker for a very specific decade. They believed they were capturing a memory, and they did, though perhaps not entirely the one they intended.
The historian's note
The photograph captures a group of tourists in the Generalife gardens of the Alhambra complex, located in Granada, Spain, during the 1970s. The structure visible in the background is consistent with elements of the Partal Palace or similar pavilions within the Alhambra. The Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a vast palace and fortress complex that served as the residence for the Nasrid rulers of the Emirate of Granada. Its extensive gardens, particularly the Generalife, are renowned for their Islamic horticulture and architectural integration.
Throughout the 20th century, and particularly from the mid-century onwards, the Alhambra became a significant international tourist destination. This image reflects the growing trend of European travel and cultural tourism amongst younger generations in the post-war era, with the fashion choices serving as a specific temporal marker for the decade.
