Tourists in the 1970s gather around the Court of the Lions, an ancient wonder designed for quiet reflection but now serving primarily as a backdrop for vacation photographs. The fountain, with its twelve stone beasts, continues to spray water with the same dedication it has for centuries, largely oblivious to the modern footwear passing by.
They mill about, admiring the intricate Moorish arches and the persistent drip of water, each person attempting to connect with the past whilst simultaneously trying not to bump into anyone else. A uniformed guide stands nearby, his job presumably to explain things that most people are too busy looking at to hear.
This is how ancient palaces survive: by becoming stages for generations of visitors, each convinced their gaze is uniquely insightful. The structure itself remains, a testament to architects who probably worried more about water pressure than tourist flow.
The historian's note
The scene depicts the Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones) within the Nasrid Palaces of the Alhambra complex in Granada, Spain, during the 1970s. This iconic courtyard, built in the 14th century by Sultan Muhammad V of the Emirate of Granada, is a prime example of Nasrid architecture and Islamic art.
Central to the court is the Fountain of the Lions, an alabaster basin supported by twelve marble lions, from whose mouths water originally flowed. The design of the court, with its surrounding arcades and central fountain, symbolises paradise in Islamic tradition, providing both aesthetic beauty and practical cooling.
By the 1970s, the Alhambra was a well-established and highly popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world to experience its historical grandeur. Its enduring appeal lies in its architectural mastery, intricate decoration, and its role as a testament to the cultural legacy of Al-Andalus.
