The view from an aeroplane in the 1970s offered a unique perspective on human endeavour, turning vast, sprawling communities into neat, almost geometric patterns on the earth. It revealed how much effort went into organising a landscape, even if the landscape preferred to remain a vast expanse of dust and distant mountains.
The persistent habit of people to build cities in places where water doesn't naturally flow meant endless grids of development expanded into arid regions. From this height, all the individual houses and businesses simply blended into a uniform texture, an almost biological growth spreading across the terrain.
The aeroplane wing, a marvel of mid-century engineering, provided the stable platform for this observation. It allowed travellers to contemplate the organised chaos below, perhaps whilst enjoying a complimentary beverage, momentarily detached from the ground-level consequences of all that carefully plotted expansion.
The historian's note
This aerial photograph from the 1970s captures the extensive urban expansion characteristic of the period, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Commercial air travel provided a new vantage point, allowing for wide-scale documentation of human impact on the environment.
During the 1970s, many cities, especially in the American Southwest, experienced significant growth, pushing residential and commercial developments into previously undeveloped desert or mountain-adjacent lands. This expansion was facilitated by infrastructure improvements and the increasing availability of air conditioning.
Such images serve as a valuable historical record, illustrating patterns of urbanisation, land use change, and the scale of human intervention in natural landscapes during the latter half of the 20th century.
