Quelqu'un a calé ce bébé contre la partie la plus lumineuse de la cour et a pointé un appareil photo vers lui, sur la théorie confiante que plus de ciel signifiait une meilleure photo. Ce n'était pas le cas. Le résultat est un visage rendu en détail parfait et patient, et un arrière-plan réduit au genre d'éblouissement surexposé que les photographes amateurs des années 1960 acceptaient comme le prix à payer pour travailler en plein air sans posemètre.

Le bavoir à carreaux vichy froncé, du type bordé d'une dentelle à bord ondulé, était la tenue bébé standard de la décennie, cousue ou achetée spécifiquement pour des occasions exactement comme celle-ci. Un bras de quelqu'un est visible au bord du cadre, tenant l'enfant en place pour inspection, faisant le vrai travail de garde d'enfants tout en ne recevant aucun crédit photographique.

Le bébé, de son côté, regarde l'appareil photo avec le scepticisme plat et insouciant courant chez les nourrissons qui n'ont pas encore appris qu'une lentille est censée signifier quelque chose. On lui dirait plus tard que c'était une photo très importante. Il n'avait aucune opinion sur la question à ce moment-là.
