El general ecuestre arriba en su pedestal blanco ha visto tráfico peor que este, aunque no por mucho. Debajo de él un Citroën 2CV se abre paso por la glorieta con esa presunción particular de un automóvil diseñado para agricultores franceses, ahora puesto en servicio como transporte urbano en una capital sudamericana que había adoptado la mitad de los desechos automotrices de Europa y los llamó flota.

Un Fiat 600 rojo y un microbús azul destartalado esperan su turno, cada uno representando una teoría diferente sobre cuántas personas deberían caber en cuánto espacio, todos aparentemente correctos simultáneamente. Los peatones cruzan detrás del monumento con la confianza desapasionada de gente que todavía no ha sido informada de que este cruce será algún día una fotografía estudiada por sus automóviles en lugar de por su general.

Nadie en la imagen parece pensar que nada de esto sea notable, que es la señal más confiable de que lo será décadas después.
