Somebody has decided that the point of retirement, or at least of a two-week furlough from it, is to walk uphill on rocks that do not want to be walked on. The man in the foreground stands over the scree with the fixed, slightly betrayed look of a person recalculating how far the next ridge actually is, his daypack riding high in the style favored before load-bearing hip belts existed.
Farther along, two more figures push on past the boulder field, one in a wide white hat that belongs more to a garden party than a glacial valley, proof that 1960s trekking gear was mostly whatever people already owned. This is the era when high-altitude trekking in the Andes shifted from the business of surveyors and missionaries to the business of enthusiastic amateurs with guidebooks and no real sense of what altitude does to a knee.
Nobody in the group appears to be discussing turning back, which is the tell. The valley itself, scraped bare by a glacier that used to be considerably more ambitious than it is now, does not care either way.
The historian's note
The scene shows a group of hikers ascending a glacial valley in a high Andean cordillera, most likely in Peru, during a period when international trekking tourism to South America's high ranges was expanding rapidly. Improved regional air access and a growing outdoor recreation culture in North America and Europe brought increasing numbers of independent trekkers to ranges such as the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash during the 1960s.
The terrain visible here, with its exposed moraine, scattered erratic boulders, and steep rock walls, is characteristic of a valley shaped by Pleistocene and more recent glacial retreat, a landscape feature that drew early mountaineering and trekking expeditions precisely because it offered dramatic access to peaks above 5,000 meters without requiring technical climbing on the approach.
Casual dress and minimal equipment, evident in the group's clothing and packs, reflect the period before specialized trekking gear became standard, when many visitors to these ranges were general travelers rather than dedicated mountaineers.
