Someone stood this child on a low step after dark, in a tulle party dress the color of a school bus, and fired a flashbulb into the night with total confidence that the result would look like something. It did not, quite. The flash caught her corsage and pearls and left the rest of the yard as a black void, because amateur color film of the era was balanced for daylight, not for a man with a Kodak and good intentions standing three feet away.
The dress is doing a lot of work for a girl this small, the kind of formal excess reserved in the 1950s for dance recitals, weddings-as-flower-girl, or a birthday treated as a minor coronation. She holds still with the patient, slightly worried expression of a child who has been told not to move and not told why. Behind her a porch light and a sliver of window are the only proof a house exists at all.
What the photographer wanted was a keepsake. What he got was a girl suspended in amber light against nothing, a fair trade, as it turned out, since fifty years on the void reads as mystery and the girl still reads as the whole point.
The historian's note
Amateur color photography in the 1950s relied heavily on daylight-balanced transparency stock, which produced a strong yellow-orange cast whenever flash or artificial light was used outdoors at night. This image is a characteristic result of that mismatch, common in family snapshots of the period taken at dusk or after dark with early flashbulb units.
The child's dress, a full-skirted tulle gown with a floral corsage and pearl necklace, is consistent with formalwear made for young girls attending dance recitals, weddings, or milestone birthday events, occasions that in mid-century American and European households were treated with considerable ceremony and documented accordingly.
Such photographs, taken by family members rather than professionals, form a large and undercatalogued category of vernacular color photography from the decade, valued today for their unintentional atmospheric qualities as much as for their subject matter.
