Alguém passou muitas tardes empilhando essas pedras para formar um muro que não segue nenhuma linha de propriedade visível para ninguém além do fazendeiro que o construiu. Nos planaltos andinos, um muro assim nunca foi decorativo; mantinha o gado longe das fileiras de batata e dava ao proprietário algo a apontar durante a inevitável disputa de limites com o vizinho encosta abaixo.

Os eucaliptos alinhados em fila única ao longo dos postes da cerca não eram nativos deste vale nem deste século de memória local, tendo sido importados e plantados em fileiras pelas terras altas da Colômbia no início dos anos 1900 por sua madeira de crescimento rápido e como quebra-vento, uma decisão tão bem-sucedida que as árvores hoje parecem sempre ter pertencido ali. Mais abaixo, o lago faz o trabalho silencioso de um reservatório, alimentando o mosaico cultivado visível na margem oposta, sendo o manejo da água um daqueles projetos de infraestrutura pouco glamorosos que ninguém fotografa de propósito.

Uma única figura em roupas claras está perto de um corte de terra crua à direita, realizando alguma pequena tarefa que a trouxe à margem naquele dia, indiferente ao fato de que oitenta anos depois alguém estudaria seu muro de pedra para viver disso.
