Somebody pulled the car onto the gravel shoulder because a sign said SCENIC VIEW, and in the 1950s that sign was treated as a civic instruction rather than a suggestion. The patchwork of fields far below, each one a different family's idea of a straight line, was the whole point of building the road up here in the first place: proof that a mountain could be improved by putting a parking area on it.

The haze that swallows the horizon was blamed on humidity back then, before anyone had a word for regional air pollution, so it just got called atmosphere and photographed anyway. Nobody drove two hours up a ridge to be told the view was hazy that day. The camera came out regardless, because the trip itself was the achievement and the picture was the receipt.

Down in that valley people were doing actual work, plowing, fencing, arguing about property lines, while up here the entertainment was simply standing still and looking at where they lived from a great distance. It is the specific vacation logic of the era: drive uphill, admire the flatness, drive back down into it.
