Alguém parou numa encosta pedregosa, enquadrou uma foto de nada em particular, e deixou o minarete fazer todo o trabalho. Nos anos 1960, uma aldeia distante era geralmente identificada pelo seu ponto mais alto, e aqui a torre de gesso que se ergue ao lado de um telhado de telhas vermelhas te diz tudo que o primeiro plano vazio não diz: que há pessoas morando ali, que rezam numa programação, e que o fotógrafo não era um deles hoje.

A terra diante da câmera é do tipo que nunca ganha uma legenda por seus próprios méritos: cascalho frouxo, capim ralo, algumas árvores recurvadas pelo vento de pé onde nada mais cresceria. Fotografa como terra selvagem, mas quase certamente era pastagem de alguém, trabalhada por cabras e intempéries muito antes de qualquer turista carregar uma câmera através dela.

A premissa por trás da foto é comum para a época: que a distância intermediária vazia é o verdadeiro tema, e a aldeia é apenas cenário para ela. A história geralmente discorda. A casa com o minarete sobreviveu ao breve momento em que a encosta foi uma oportunidade fotográfica.
