On the image

Someone decided that the first real blizzard of the season was exactly the right moment to go outside and stand in it. She has dressed for cold — rust-colored jacket, dark skirt, a scarf knotted under her chin in the manner of a woman who learned weather from a generation that took it seriously — and she is standing in the accumulating snow against the brick wall of a postwar ranch house while the storm comes in sideways, lit up by a flash that turns every flake into a white streak.

The flash is the giveaway. Someone else is holding the camera, which means this was deliberate: a record of the storm, or of her in the storm, at what appears to be a late-winter or early-spring evening when a surprise snowfall was still remarkable enough to document. In the 1950s a color snapshot taken at night in a blizzard was a minor technical ambition, and the fact that it worked — that she is sharp against the brick while the snow draws wild diagonals across the frame — would have felt like an achievement worth keeping.

She is looking off to one side with an expression that suggests she has been asked to stand there long enough to make her feelings about the arrangement perfectly clear.
