On the image

Somewhere in rural Australia on a warm afternoon, a woman in a floral skirt and coral blouse has stopped at what appears to be a roadside rest area and is eating an ice cream with the focused attention of someone who has been driving for a long time. The sparse scrubby trees, the raw timber platform behind her, and the pale hardpan ground place this somewhere in the drier inland of Queensland or New South Wales — the kind of stop that existed less as a facility than as a permission to pull over.

The two Detroit-built sedans parked nearby date the scene firmly to the mid-1950s, when Australians were buying American-styled cars in numbers that suggested everything was going very well, which for that decade it roughly was. Road trips had become possible for ordinary families, and the infrastructure for them — proper rest stops, sealed highways, reliable roadhouses — had not quite caught up with the ambition.

She is not performing enjoyment for the camera. She is eating the ice cream because it is hot and she wants it, which is the most honest thing anyone does at a roadside stop in the Australian summer.
