Somewhere in the 1950s, a woman paused at a stone parapet overlook — the kind of low wall built by a parks department that understood tourism meant standing at the edge of something large and smiling for the person holding the camera. She wore black trousers, a turtleneck, and a Nordic-patterned sweater, which in that decade was the correct outfit for demonstrating that a holiday involved altitude and mild exertion rather than a beach.

The layered pine forest and raw cliff face behind her suggest a mountain setting in the American West or possibly the European Alps, the kind of destination that in the postwar years required real planning and represented a genuine occasion. You did not arrive at a viewpoint like this by accident; you arrived because someone had read a brochure and made a reservation three months in advance.

She is smiling with the specific brightness of someone who has been told this is the good part of the trip, and she believes it, because it is.
