Somebody knelt in last autumn's leaf litter to get close to a scatter of white trillium, the kind of spring wildflower that shows up right on schedule in eastern hardwood forests and disappears again before the canopy fills in. The 1950s were a boom time for amateur nature photography, mostly because color slide film had just become affordable enough for ordinary people to believe they were now naturalists. The composition is not composed so much as aimed, which was the style of the era: get the flower in frame, worry about the tangle of dead branches and last year's leaves later.
Nobody labeled which woods this was, which was standard practice for hobbyist botanizing at the time. The point was never the location. The point was proving, one Kodachrome slide at a time, that spring had in fact arrived and that someone had been paying attention to it.
The historian's note
White trillium, Trillium grandiflorum, is a spring ephemeral wildflower native to deciduous forests of eastern North America. It blooms briefly each spring before the tree canopy leafs out and blocks the sunlight the plant depends on, then dies back to its underground rhizome for the rest of the year.
The species was a common subject for amateur nature photographers in the postwar decades, when color transparency film made it practical for hobbyists to document wildflowers in the field for the first time. In several states, including Michigan, wild trillium picking was restricted or discouraged by conservation authorities during this period, making photographs like this one a substitute for collecting the flower itself.
