Ten years after the end of the war, the facade still stood because facades are good at standing — the columns, the arched arcade, the iron balcony rail, all structurally intact and completely pointless, since everything behind them had burned away. This was the particular condition of postwar West German cities in the 1950s: the shell of civic ambition preserved by its own massiveness while the interior remained open to the sky, a monument to the difference between stone and the city that once filled it.
Passersby in the foreground move past the ruin with the practiced indifference of people who have been looking at it for a decade. A compact European sedan is parked at the curb as though this were ordinary streetscape, which, by 1955 or so, it was. Reconstruction was underway across the Federal Republic, but the debris-clearance and rebuilding schedules were uneven, and a gutted neoclassical public building behind a row of orange bollards simply meant the site hadn't reached the top of the list yet.
The building reads as a municipal or cultural institution — a theater, a court, a concert hall — the kind of structure a nineteenth-century German city built to announce it had arrived. The postwar decade turned it into evidence of the opposite, and nobody had yet decided whether to restore it, demolish it, or simply continue parking next to it.
