On the image

In a Balkan village sometime in the 1950s, women are doing the laundry the way their grandmothers did, crouched over a small weir on the village stream, beating cloth against wooden boards while the current carries the rinse water away — a system that required no electricity, no plumbing, and no capital investment, which was fortunate because rural southeastern Europe had none of those things in reliable supply. Two women walking the unpaved village road carry their own loads and pay no particular attention to the washing party, because this is simply Tuesday. The headscarf on the woman in the bright red sweater marks the generation that still observed the old convention, while the posture of all of them — purposeful, unhurried, accustomed — makes clear that nobody here considered this a hardship worth remarking on. Behind them, denim and cloth already hang to dry on a fence, the week's work visibly in progress. Within a decade or two, a standpipe or a cooperative laundry would arrive and end this arrangement forever, and the stream would go back to being merely scenic.
