Two girls in Sunday dresses stand at the base of what is almost certainly a Euclid or LeTourneau off-highway hauler, a machine whose tires alone stand taller than either of them. Somewhere in the 1950s, heavy-equipment manufacturers discovered that putting their largest machines on public display drew crowds the way zoos drew crowds — the sheer scale made ordinary people feel usefully small. A woman, likely their mother, leans against the rear wheel with the composed patience of someone who has already read all the placards and is waiting for the children to finish being impressed. The girls appear to have accepted the implicit dare of every equipment show: stand next to the biggest thing and let someone photograph the size difference. Nobody in the frame is thinking about the fact that the machine will outlast every assumption about how the postwar world would be built, including the assumption that events like this one — open, sprawling, free — would always be available on a Saturday.
