On the image

A figure in dark winter clothing sits at the edge of a frozen lake in the gathering dusk, watching the last light drain from the sky while a conifer forest closes in behind. The ice glows with that particular luminescence that arrives in the hour after sunset, when the water surface has not yet surrendered the day entirely. In the middle distance, a small boat or cabin smoke suggests other people are out here too, pursuing whatever it is people pursued on frozen lakes in winter—ice fishing, most likely, the kind of patient, solitary occupation that required a man to sit for hours in cold on the assumption that the fish below were worth the wait. The companion in the orange jacket at the left edge of the frame suggests this was a social outing, the kind of expedition where someone thought to bring a camera to document the event, which means the people here believed this was worth remembering. It is hard to imagine now why anyone would document the ordinary act of sitting still in the cold.
