On the image

Somewhere in a mid-century American suburb, a toddler sits strapped into a large tubular-framed pram with the resigned composure of someone who has accepted that adults will keep doing this to them all winter. The blue knitted helmet-bonnet, pulled tight around the face and tied under the chin, was the 1950s solution to the problem of cold ears, and it was applied to every small child without exception or appeal. The pram itself is the period's characteristic engineering — a substantial steel construction that could survive a minor collision and weighed roughly as much as a compact car — because a generation of parents who had lived through real scarcity built things, including baby carriages, to last. The bare trees and patchy snow along the residential street place this firmly in the dead of a Northern winter, a season the era treated not as a reason to stay indoors but as an opportunity to demonstrate that children needed fresh air at all times, in all temperatures. The toddler, for the record, looks unconvinced.
