The historian's note
This image captures The Lodge at Vail, a foundational property in the development of the Vail ski resort in Colorado during the 1970s. The Lodge at Vail was one of the first structures built in the resort village, opening in 1962, and established much of the architectural character that would define Vail, drawing heavily on Alpine and European chalet designs.
By the 1970s, Vail was an established and popular destination, attracting tourists and skiers with its dedicated infrastructure and European-inspired village layout. The architecture seen here reflects a deliberate choice to create an immersive, themed environment for vacationers, differentiating it from traditional American mountain lodges.
