The Stardust opened on the Strip in 1958 as a mid-sized casino resort, and by the early 1960s its neon signs had become a fixture of the desert skyline—two enormous wheels, one atop the marquee spelling out the name in purple cursive, another lower down advertising the resort hotel and food service. The building behind is a perfect specimen of 1960s optimism: a rectangular slab of blue-painted concrete with balconies stamped in neat rows, the kind of structure that promised affordability and volume, as though housing enough rooms in the same box would automatically generate prosperity. The sign itself is the real infrastructure—a monument to the theory that if you made the neon bright enough and shaped it into something resembling motion, tourists would understand they were meant to gamble and stay. The whole setup reads as a moment when Las Vegas believed that bigger signs and more rooms were the same thing as a future.
The historian's note
The Stardust Resort and Casino opened on July 2, 1958, on the Las Vegas Strip between Flamingo Road and Paradise Road, designed by architects Marnell Corlett. At opening it was the largest resort hotel in Nevada, with 1,065 rooms and a 105,000-square-foot casino floor. The neon blade signs became iconic elements of the Strip landscape, particularly the two illuminated wheels visible here. The resort operated until 2006 and was demolished in 2007. The photograph documents the property during its established years as a major mid-range casino destination, when the Stardust competed for the same market as the Sahara and Sands hotels. The architectural style and neon signage are characteristic of 1960s Las Vegas hospitality design, when the city marketed itself to middle-class American tourists seeking affordable glamour and 24-hour entertainment.
