Three young men have pulled the car onto the shoulder because the mountain range demanded it, in the manner of every desert road trip of the era where geology was assumed to be self-explanatory and worth the film. Two lean on the roof like men inspecting a used car rather than a fifty-million-year-old uplift, the third stands apart in a white t-shirt, already bored with a view that will later become the only souvenir anyone remembers.
The car itself, parked at an angle with its chrome catching the sun, was the real point of the stop. In 1960s road-trip logic, the vehicle got you to the scenery, but the scenery existed mostly to be stood in front of, briefly, before getting back in.
Nobody in the frame appears to know the name of the mountain, and nobody thought that mattered. The landscape would still be there. The car, on payments, would not.
