Someone stood very close to this branch and waited for the light to cooperate, which in the 1960s meant squinting through a viewfinder and trusting Kodachrome to do the rest. A home orchard in high summer was a small point of pride then, proof that a family had done something useful with its land beyond mowing it, and a ripe peach was reason enough to load a roll of slide film.
The fruit hangs heavy and close, deliberately overexposed against a sky bleached to nothing, the kind of composition an amateur horticulturist reaches for when he wants the harvest, not the scenery, remembered. Somewhere behind the branch the rest of the orchard blurs into rows of trees doing the same patient work, unphotographed and unbothered.
Nobody in 1965 imagined this particular peach would outlast the person who grew it, the tree it grew on, and the kitchen it was destined for. It was just Tuesday's dessert, caught mid-ripen by someone who liked peaches and owned a camera.
