Someone in ancient Rome designed this courtyard with the intention of impressing neighbors, using columns and a formal garden layout that suggested both wealth and impeccable taste. Two millennia later, modern custodians maintain the greenery, ensuring that the ruins still look presentable for the busloads of tourists who expect their ancient history to be neatly trimmed.
The original owners likely never considered that their domestic fountain would one day be surrounded by meticulously trimmed hedges and a low railing, designed to keep people from touching anything too old or too fragile. The subtle addition of modern light fixtures under the porticoes suggests an ongoing effort to make history accessible, even if that history is mostly just foundation walls.
It is a testament to good architecture that even after centuries of neglect, earthquakes, and volcanic ash, the basic design still communicates "fancy house." And to modern tourism, which demands things be both ancient and well-manicured, preferably with interpretive signs.

The city of Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, preserving its structures, artwork, and domestic life under volcanic ash and pumice. Extensive excavations began in the mid-18th century and continue to the present day.
These gardens, often located at the rear of Roman homes, served as private retreats and display areas for sculpture and fountains, reflecting the wealth and cultural aspirations of their owners. Today, they are maintained as part of the ongoing conservation and presentation efforts for visitors.
