On the image

The 1950s space program was still largely theoretical, which meant engineers spent years perfecting the machinery of survival before anyone rode it into orbit. These parachutes descending through clear sky were part of capsule-recovery testing—the assumption being that if you could get a man to space, you had better know how to get him back down. Each dome represents hours of engineering argument about drag coefficients, deployment angles, and whether canvas could survive the speeds involved. The smaller shapes below are likely instruments or chase aircraft, the whole enterprise a methodical accumulation of data points that looked mundane from the ground but felt urgent to the people who believed a human being would someday depend on it.
