On the image

Someone decided that a perfectly good mountain needed to be systematically disassembled, a process begun by carving it into neat, concentric terraces. Each leveled step downward represents countless tons of material moved, all in pursuit of whatever valuable thing lay underneath the earth's surface. The landscape architect for this project clearly specialized in 'total transformation' rather than 'gentle integration'.

Down in the pit, small pieces of heavy equipment work tirelessly. A drilling rig suggests precision, perhaps to blast away more rock, reminding everyone that even tearing things down requires careful planning and a deep belief in the profitability of the endeavor. It's an industrial ballet, if ballet involved a lot of dust and very loud noises.

The piles of broken rock in the foreground are the byproduct, a monument to human determination to extract resources, no matter the scale of the effort required in the 1970s. Future generations will find this and wonder if we left anything else behind.

The historian's note

This image depicts a large-scale open-pit mining operation, a method of surface mining where rock or minerals are extracted from a pit dug from the surface downwards. The visible terraced levels are characteristic of this technique, designed to maintain pit stability and provide access for machinery.
