A large transatlantic ocean liner — black hull, white superstructure, two orange-topped funnels in the Cunard style — moves steadily across a broad harbour anchorage while a small tender trails in her wake, the whole scene watched from a considerable elevation that suggests a departing or arriving passenger with access to an upper deck or shore vantage point. In the 1950s, crossing the Atlantic by sea was not a choice between options; it was the only serious option, and the liner was the dominant fact of that world, staffed, provisioned, and scheduled with the confidence of an institution that had no reason to imagine otherwise. The low coastal skyline behind her — flat postwar housing blocks and a modest port town — reads as Southampton, the great liner terminal that dispatched and received these ships on a schedule as fixed as the tides, and indeed more socially significant. A small harbour craft keeps her respectful distance, as working vessels always did from the Queens, aware that the difference in tonnage made the etiquette of proximity a matter of physics as much as courtesy. Within a decade of this moment, jet aircraft would erase the entire premise on which that ship, that schedule, and that way of moving between continents had been organised, and the liner would become a cruise ship or a museum, depending on luck.
