A photographer stands in a deep valley bordered by coniferous forest, pointing a camera toward a snow-capped peak that rises in the middle distance like the only thing worth recording on a winter afternoon in the mountains. The entire valley floor sits in shadow while the peak catches what little light the overcast sky permits, which is the kind of compositional accident that happens when someone learns to frame a landscape before learning to account for the sun's actual position. The dense evergreen slopes on either side suggest Pacific Northwest or northern Rocky Mountain terrain, the kind of place where mid-century photographers went to prove that America contained grandeur and that they had the equipment to document it. The exposure is difficult—the foreground is nearly black, the peak barely defined—but that hazard is the price of trying to photograph scale and wilderness with film stock and optics designed for brighter conditions. He waited for the weather to clear enough to justify the trip and took the shot anyway because he had driven this far and the peak was there.
