Somewhere in a folded Balkan valley, a large whitewashed monastery compound sits at the center of dense deciduous forest as though the trees are actively trying to swallow it back. The terraced limestone slopes climbing above it suggest centuries of human effort to coax something useful from the karst, an effort the forest is quietly winning. Buildings like this one — low, colonnaded, built around a courtyard — were the administrative and spiritual anchors of mountain communities that organized their entire calendar around them.

In the 1960s, depending on which side of a border this valley fell on, the monastery was either a carefully managed piece of socialist-era cultural heritage or a quietly tolerated relic that the state hadn't yet decided what to do with. Either way, someone thought it worth documenting from the ridge above, which is the kind of decision a traveler makes when the view clarifies exactly how determined the institution was to be there in the first place.

The terracing on the upper slopes tells you this valley fed people for a very long time. The monastery in the middle tells you it also organized them.
