Off by default. Turning it on lets the image respond to your cursor with a shallow sense of depth, rebuilt from a depth map computed when the image was catalogued. It is an interpretation for looking, not a measured 3D model — and it falls back to the flat image where the browser can't render it.

On the image

A concrete dam curves across a narrow mountain gorge, its face studded with regularly spaced anchor blocks that make it look less like infrastructure and more like a engineer's confidence made permanent. Dense coniferous forest crowds both cliff faces, and a wooden logging road switchbacks down the gravelly embankment toward the water—the kind of road that existed because someone had decided that the trees mattered more than the view, or perhaps that they mattered equally. A truck is visible in the distance on the far shore, moving timber or materials with the assumption that this arrangement—dam, forest, road, truck—would persist indefinitely. The coloration and film stock suggest mid-20th-century documentation, the sort of methodical photograph a government agency or utility company took to prove that progress and wilderness could occupy the same canyon, at least temporarily. What the photographer didn't record was how soon the assumptions in this picture would become dated.
