On the image

Someone hiked high enough onto Mount Rainier's flanks to get above the moraine rubble and look directly at the summit ice cap, then took a picture that proves they did it. This was the mid-twentieth-century approach to mountaineering documentation: you carried a consumer camera at altitude, held it steady against the wind with varying success, and returned with a slightly washed-out frame that would spend decades in a carousel projector confirming to living-room audiences that yes, the mountain was large and white. The glaciers spreading down from the summit dome here are visibly massive in the way that once required no caption — Rainier's ice fields were simply a given, a permanent fact of the Pacific Northwest the way the Puget Sound was a given. What the person behind the camera did not know, and could not have known, is that future generations would study images exactly like this one not as vacation records but as baseline data, trying to measure precisely how much of what they were looking at is now gone.
