On the image

Sometime in the 1950s, a group of adults arranged themselves on rented wooden deck chairs at a busy organized beach — the kind with a floating pier, a boat shuttle, and a concession stand — and decided this counted as relaxing. The man in sunglasses at the front is grinning at the camera with the satisfaction of someone who has successfully done vacation correctly. Behind him the women hold their poses with the practiced ease of people who have been photographed at the beach before and know the difference between candid and staged, even if no one is admitting it.

The beach itself reads as a northern Italian or northern Adriatic resort of the postwar boom — Rimini, the Lido, or somewhere along that coastline where organized bathing establishments were perfected into an art form, complete with color-matched chairs and rowboats for hire. The whole scene operates on the postwar European conviction that leisure was something you arranged in advance, paid for by the hour, and performed in full view of your social peers.

The group has colonized their patch of sand with the efficiency of people who got there early and intend to stay. The older man on the left looks directly into the camera with the expression of a man who was told this would be a vacation and is reserving judgment.
