A man stands in what appears to be the bottom of a volcanic crater, confidently posing as if this is a completely normal place for a Sunday afternoon stroll. His yellow jacket suggests he might be prepared for unpredictable weather, or perhaps he just really likes the color yellow.
The sheer scale of the geological formations behind him suggests considerable effort was expended to reach this spot, which was presumably worth it for the bragging rights. There is some steam, a subtle reminder that the earth beneath him is not entirely inactive.
Someone had to take the picture, meaning at least two people thought this was a good idea. The entire exercise captures the 1970s urge to experience nature at its most extreme, then record it for posterity, usually with a perfectly centered subject.
