He has stopped mid-stroll to reach up and inspect a spray of bougainvillea the way a man inspects anything he suspects of being better than expected — with his chin lifted and one hand extended, as though about to correct it. The burgundy shirt is tucked with care, the gray slacks pressed, the leather case tucked under one arm. He is not gardening. He is conducting an assessment, the way men of his generation assessed anything they didn't plant themselves.

Bougainvillea in a public or hotel garden was, in the 1950s, a signal of arrival — warm-climate travel, the Mediterranean or perhaps the American Southwest or Mexico, somewhere the flowers were allowed to be extravagant in a way that postwar suburban landscaping was not. Whoever took this picture understood that the man and the flowers belonged together in the frame: both slightly showier than the occasion required.

The small camera he carries in his other hand suggests he has been documenting the trip, and someone thought it worth documenting him. He will not remember pausing here. The bougainvillea outlasted the moment by decades.
